Tomorrow is Election Day

Your vote will determine our next
City Council President

Yesterday, Jackie Clarkson was maliciously attacked without provocation by her opponent, Cynthia Wilard Lewis. Here is her response:

Endorsed by the Times-Picyaune, Jackie Clarkson is respected for her integrity. Willard-Lewis has a record of back-room dealing and questionable ethics. The fact is, it was Willard-Lewis who campaign money from trash haulers and from landfill companies connected to Sherman Copelin. She then gave her contributors a sweetheart deal on city garbage collection contracts which have New Orleans paying more than double the rate paid in Jefferson Parish. Yet our streets are still covered in debris and we have no recycling program. It's no wonder she lead the efforts to derail the Council's creation of an Inspector General.

Given the facts, who do you want as the next council President?

EDITORIAL:
Clarkson for council

Monday, November 12, 2007
The Times-Picayune

New Orleans is still in the early stages of what will be a long rebuilding process post-Katrina. Now more than ever the city needs leaders with vision, integrity and determination to rebuild this great city.

Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson, a Realtor, former district council member and legislator, is such a person.

Ms. Clarkson's extensive experience in the business world gives her important tools for this position. The council will be dealing with thorny issues surrounding blight, zoning and housing renewal in the next few years, and Ms. Clarkson's real estate expertise would be useful. She knows how the marketplace works and understands government's role.

During her two terms as a district council member, Ms. Clarkson was a strong supporter of neighborhoods and was tenacious in her defense of the historic fabric of the French Quarter. She also was instrumental in the development of the federal city project in Algiers. In the Legislature, she championed tougher laws on blight and against stalking and domestic violence.

New Orleans is a diverse city with myriad needs, and Ms. Clarkson pledges to work for the entire community. She has shown in her work as a district council member that she can work with a broad range of people for the good of the city. Her skills, her energy and her experience make her the best choice for this job.

Gambit Weekly

October 16, 2007

"Clarkson, a realtor, still has more energy at 71 than many candidates half her age. She has served Algiers and the French Quarter as the District C council member twice already, from 1990 to 1994 and from 2002 to 2006; she also served as a West Bank state representative from 1994 to 2002. In those capacities, Clarkson authored legislation on governmental ethics and led the fight to win Washington's approval of a military-friendly 'federal city" on the West Bank. She will be a tireless advocate against violent crime and corruption, and she will work at reforming city contracts. Clarkson's pledge to be a coalition builder on the council may test her relentless, get-it-done nature, but we've never known her to shrink from a challenge."
